East Portland Rotary Club funds PCC scholarships
for teens in recovery from addiction.
De Paul Treatment Centers received word that
the East Portland Rotary Club will fund Portland
Community College enrollment fees for four students
at De Paul’s on-site alternative high school.
Depending on specific classes, the gift will be
in the approximate amount of $1,000.
All of De Paul’s youth clients participate
in classes at De Paul’s Alternative High
School. The project was designed to address the
need to promote higher learning for the students
in De Paul’s residential youth treatment
program for chemical dependency who have already
obtained their high school diploma or GED.
Engaging in academic learning will reinforce
the skills learned through treatment and promote
a new clean and sober lifestyle for recovering
youth. Setting academic goals and achieving them
will build self-esteem in these teens and help
them reach future career goals.
The new project is one of several recent milestones
in De Paul’s efforts to expand the school
program, such as the hiring of two new positions,
Lead Teacher and GED tutor, and the receipt of
full accreditation. As a pilot program for De
Paul, the first year of funding through East Portland
Rotary Club will be instrumental in evaluating
the program and demonstrating results to future
donors.
