September is Recovery Month: De Paul Treatment Centers invites the community to “Shine a Light on Addiction and Recovery,” a vigil remembering those who have been lost to the disease of addiction and honoring those who are in recovery. The event takes place on September 28 from 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm at 1312 SW Washington Street in downtown Portland. The event is open to anyone in the community and will feature speeches by Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Sheila North, Executive Director, De Paul Treatment Centers, and prominent members of the local recovery community. Sponsors of the vigil include Cedar Hills Hospital and City Center Parking.
“Shine a Light on Addiction and Recovery” is part of SAMSHA’s National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. De Paul believes the event will help to educate the public on the effectiveness of treatment and the possibility of recovery, and will weaken the stigma surrounding substance use disorders and addiction. "People in recovery are in the mainstream, and can be upstanding citizens like everyone else. It is time we speak openly about this taboo topic. Prevention works, treatment is effective, and we see people every day who can and do recover,” says Sheila North, Executive Director, De Paul Treatment Centers.
Governor Kitzhaber signed a proclamation last month stating that nearly 275,000 adults and over 27,000 youth in Oregon have drug or alcohol issues, and estimating that untreated addiction costs our state more than $5.9 billion each year. The proclamation calls addiction, “a chronic, relapsing brain disease that can be successfully treated, like diabetes, asthma, and other chronic conditions.”

The trio took the Max to the Oregon Convention Center, did a brief warm up run and watched the start of the 10K race. A few minutes later it was their turn. They joined a group of 1500 runners to take part in the Race for the Roses 5K.
While this scenario sounds like it could be just another Sunday race day for many people, the 5K was a window to new possibilities for Josh and Doug. They are both participating in residential drug and alcohol treatment at De Paul Treatment Centers (DP) and running an organized race is something neither had considered before a few months ago....
